Abstract:The spatial distribution of urban land is a core issue in urban geography and urban planning studies. Within this context, the relationship between residential and industrial spatial layout is a vital element of the study of urban land space layout. In China, over the past three decades the pattern of urban spatial organization has changed against a background of rapid urban expansion. Using the case study of the central city of Changchun and referring to a series of recent date research datas, such as current land use maps; the study also employs the software platform ArcGIS. Based on quantitative analysis methods, such as patch chesion index, standard deviation ellipse, kernel density estimation and circle-layer analysis, this paper measures the coupling degree of the spatial evolution of residential and industrial space from 1995 to 2013. The study reveals the following points:1) There is a clear tendency of "discretization" of industrial, residential and city land use in Changchun city, with the fluctuation range of the patch cohesion index in terms of residential land being the biggest of all. This will arguably lead to the reduction of the spatial coupling degree of industrial and residential land. 2) According to the features of the "core-periphery" distribution embodied in the case study's residential and industrial land use, it is obvious that the relationship between residential and industrial land inside the "third ring-road" is "anti-synergistic". 3) According to the analysis of the evolution pattern of residential and industrial land use, the coupling degree of residential and industrial land shows a tendency of decline. On the one hand, there are differences in the expansion process of industrial and residential land, the two spaces are separated in overall evolution process, and the expansion of living space is obviously behind that of industrial space. On the other hand, the extended model of industrial space and living space also exhibits significant differences between them.
